THE VINEYARD

Le reflet d'ogier vin de bordeaux

OUR HISTORY

The chateau is an old hunting lodge built in the 17th century by the Gourgue family and owes its name to the historical figure Ogier de Gourgue. During the second half of the 16th century, he was Councillor to King Louis XIII, Treasurer of France and General of Finance in Bordeaux.

Ogier de Gourgue was Lord of Vayres and built his fortune by investing in lands and domains.

OUR COMMITMENTS

OUR VISION

Organic farming methods, respect for the environment. The work in the vineyard is performed in the purest tradition. The process of converting to the French organic farming standard started in 2010 and the property produced its first ‘organic wine’ certified vintage in 2012.

Our goal is to produce high quality wine, whilst respecting the vines, the environment and our consumers.

The chateau is an old hunting lodge built in the 17th century by the Gourgue family and owes its name to the historical figure Ogier de Gourgue. During the second half of the 16th century, he was Councillor to King Louis XIII, Treasurer of France and General of Finance in Bordeaux.

After being passed down to his eldest son, Marc Antoine de Gourgue, who was the first President of the Bordeaux Parliament, the chateau changed owner several times during the following centuries. This pretty estate was the property of FOURES family during the last two centuries and has been owned by VINCENT family since 2010.

Jean-Marc VINCENT, head of his own construction company and an avid wine connoisseur, fell under the spell of Château Ogier de Gourgue and decided to devote himself to his passion for vine-growing and wine.

On his arrival, he undertook major renovation work and to modernise the facilities and to meet modern standards.

The single winery building was converted into a fermenting room fitted with stainless steel, conical, temperature-controlled vats. The barrel cellar was redesigned and re-sited underground to provide better conditions for ageing and maturing.

In September 2012, his daughter, Claire, with her background in the luxury and beauty industries, came to join him in this new adventure!

Together, father and daughter decided to pool their talents to lead this property on the path to excellence.

Winegrowing since Roman times

The Côtes de Bordeaux region is a narrow strip, 60 km long and 5 km wide, on the right bank of the river Garonne. Perched above the river and covered in vineyards and woods, the hills and valleys of the Côtes de Bordeaux offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the entire Bordeaux region.

THE 1st CENTURY BC,

Burdigala, the Roman name for Bordeaux, was a port surrounded by marshland. The Romans, who already had a long tradition of grape growing, planted vines on the driest lands with the best orientation for the evening sun: the slopes of the Garonne valley.

THE MIDDLE AGES,

An increase in religious establishments and Benedictine abbeys led to the area of land being farmed growing. The region is strategically important because it is situated alongside navigable waterways and this led to several castles being built: Langoiran, Cadillac, Lormont…

THE 18th AND 19th CENTURIES

Being close to Bordeaux, the region became the territory of choice for nobles and the bourgeois from Bordeaux to build their country residences: the follies

Harvesting

The ripeness of the grapes and the date for harvesting are determined using two methods:

  • The analytical method measures the sugar, acidity and tannin levels in the grapes. These tests give an idea of the ripeness of the grapes, their skins and their seeds.

  • However, tasting the grapes remains the most important factor for deciding when to harvest.

The grapes are harvested by machines.

The grapes are then passed through an optical sorting machine before they enter the winery: this removes any foreign bodies, separates whole grapes from damaged grapes and sorts the grapes according to their ripeness. Only whole, healthy and sufficiently mature grapes are kept for winemaking.

Winemaking

The grapes are then fermented in small stainless steel, conical, temperature-controlled vats.

The low temperatures used for the first fermentation preserves the fresh fruit’s aromas. Pumping over is done several times a day. The fermentation lasts from 4 to 6 weeks.

The winemaking process complies with the specifications for Organic Wines.

Wine is then vinified in vats where it continues its development.

The entire production of Château Ogier de Gourgue, 25,000 bottles, is bottled at the chateau.
